Seed Oils 101

Seed oils, AKA vegetable oils, have overwhelmed our modern diets and skincare products. This widespread use comes with some serious drawbacks and concerns associated with their consumption or application:

Omega-6 to Omega-3 Imbalance: Many seed oils, such as soybean oil, corn oil, and sunflower oil, are high in omega-6 fatty acids. While omega-6 fatty acids are essential, they should be balanced with omega-3 fatty acids. An imbalance towards excessive omega-6 intake can contribute to inflammation and various chronic diseases.

Highly Processed: Seed oils often undergo extensive processing, including refining, bleaching, and deodorizing, which can strip them of beneficial nutrients and antioxidants originally present in the seeds.

Susceptibility to Oxidation: Seed oils are prone to oxidation due to their high levels of polyunsaturated fats. When exposed to heat, light, or air, they can form harmful compounds such as free radicals and oxidized lipids, which may contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

Linked to Chronic Diseases: Consumption of seed oils, especially when used in excessive amounts in processed foods, has been associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Potential for Allergies: Some individuals may be allergic to specific seed oils, leading to allergic reactions when consumed or applied topically.

Environmental Impact: The production of large quantities of seed oils, especially from crops like soybeans and palm oil, can have significant environmental consequences, including deforestation, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss.

Impact on Skincare: In skincare products, seed oils might not be suitable for everyone. They can be comedogenic (pore-clogging) for some individuals, potentially exacerbating acne or other skin issues.

GMO Concerns: Many seed oils are derived from genetically modified (GM) crops, raising concerns about the potential health effects of consuming GM ingredients.

At bottom, seed oils are a 20th century invention. At TALLAC, we believe in ancestral living which is why we believe so strongly we shouldn't be putting synthetic chemicals on our faces every single day.
